ACR like all other RAW converters before it handles a conversion of the RAW file that but never actually changes the original RAW... Basically it stores the changed settings in another file and applies the changes in a lossless way during conversion to whatever format you choose.

Now what I'm wondering is what exactly CNX offers that leaves PS CS 3 ACR so far behind.

What file are you editing (in ACR) if you are not editing the RAW
file? I do not follow your statement above.
