30D vs 40D

I've been comparing the performance of my 40D to the 30D that I just bought secondhand (for backup). Although I haven't completed all the tests, two things seem almost coclusive at this point.

First, the 30D does not have the dynamic range of the 40D. Highlights seem to wash out about one stop (rough estimate) sooner. I tested this by photographing a bowl of pennies lit so that the dynamic range exceeded both bodies' capabilities.

Second, the 30D focusses more accurately a higher percentage of the time than the 40D. 40D sharpness is about the same if I focus manually using liveview, but in AF, it almost never gets it right. The 30D, on the other hand, produces razor sharp images (as good as using the 40D liveview) at least four times out of five. I tested this using a 28-135mm set at 135mm, f/5.6 and f/8, shooting a document taped on the wall about 25 feet away.

Has anyone else here performed testing of this nature on both models?

Jack
