Re: DP1 movie mode.

Hello, and thank you for taking time to read and respond to this
email. I am seriously considering the purchase of the DP1 as a "carry
everywhere" camera. I presently use various Canon DSLR's which are
inconvenient to lug at all times. As well, I would prefer not to
carry my video camera as well. My question: is it likely that through
a firmware upgrade, the DP1 may eventually receive a larger video
mode, preferably 640x480 or even a 720x480 format? This is a fairly
large concern for me, as then I could leave behind two pieces of gear
in favor of one. So far the small videos from the DP1 look superior
to my video camera in color, sharpness, and bokeh, except that they
are so small!
How many DP1 videos have you seen?...The only one I know of is Carls short video of his Sister singing - She has a great voice BTW - so do you know of any more I can look at?

Dp1, a sample of which I'm testing, does not have a threading on top ot its protuding lens, so no converter can be added; there is though a possibility to use it on the hood carrier mount which has got a threading for filters, but this would be a technical issue.

See: http://www.testiweb.com/dp1.htm where I'm going to post some pictures.

Thank you for responding once again regarding the video format of the DP1.

Many others are also talking about how desirable the DP1 would be if only it included a larger video format such as 848x480 or 640x480. I thought you may be interested to see this thread:

For now, many who want to carry just one camera day-to-day are forced to use a more inferior tool in order to have decent-size video.

According to Foveon's specification sheet, the DP1 sensor is capable of 640x480:

For this reason some of us feel that the camera is crippled by firmware, and could be greatly improved by adding improved video resolution. I have not yet purchased the DP1, and am anxious to see if this can be changed. If I am going to carry one camera everywhere, everyday, video size is that important.

Thanks for your kind replies,
An interested customer,
Michael Spotts:.

the video carl has up is about 20 seconds and is 11mb. thats about 33mb per minute, or 30 minutes per gb. thats not too bad with an 8gb SDHC (4hrs), but at 320x240. if it goes 640x480, then thats 4x the pixels and could be 8min/gb. Seems like it eats up a lot of memory to me, maybe higher compression and 640x480 would be nice
