What's a "snapshot" anyway... and what's wrong with them??

What's a "snapshot" anyway... and what's wrong with them??

There seems to be an aversion on this board by many against "snapshots". So, what is classified as snapshot? Does it mean that if I don't spend at least 10 minutes fiddling with the settings and different compositions, but instead had just one lucky shot, that means it's a automatically a picture that is "not worthy?"
