new 17-55 2.8: zoom is tight/sticky --> better for dust?

hello very helpful people,

I have bit the bullet & got a 17-55 2.8 for my 40D. (ever since getting 50mm & then 24mm primes in the last year, the 17-85 was demoted to the point of gathering dust. nothing like getting bit by the "prime" and "L" bugs in the same year. brutal.)

anyways, the zoom is tight & kind of sticky. My first thought was-- just trade it in (one reason I tend to buy local). My second thought was-- imagining some engineering manager saying "we must do a better job sealing this lens from dust, but without adding any cost!!" and the engineering community replying with "well, we can just cinch down X & Y, and it'll make zoom 'feel' worse, but sealing will improve". So third thought is, maybe I should just deal w/ the sticky zoom. it's not that bad, & I'll probably get used to it. still way easier than switching lenses.

am I smoking the bad dope? what's your verdict?

thx much
rowdy
