Hi,

For those of you who have the G9, have you decided to add the typical protective defense of a LCD protector?

The reason I bring this up specifically on the G-9 is there is a very distinct 'smoke colored' anti reflective coating on the G9 3" LCD cover. Adding the standard poly-whatever type clear LCD protector things I'd think show mixed results.

The plus being protecting from scratches, the minus perhaps adding to the surface glare that is intended to be reduced in LCD "naked" mode.

I haven't decided either way ( only had a G9 for over a week so it's still "fresh")

I imagine many of you, as I have put those cheap insurance items on other digicams but was curious as to others decission on this particular camera's LCD.

What is the consensus:
1.) Protect at all cost, irregardless of any minor issue this even presents?
2.) cover but only shoot on cloudy non-bright and sunny days?
3.) Don't cover, leave in "naked" LCD mode and don't worry about it

4.) irrelavent. Cover LCD with duct tape, only use small OVF and never look at photos after shot. Only pull card from cam and offload to laptop :)

What you are calling the "naked" LCD is actually a plastic protector over the actual LCD. The protector is replaceable for a nominal sum. Someone previously posted the part # and price. For a Canon DSLR the cost is around $20.

I installed a screen protector originally purchased for a PDA on my new G9. I did not realize that the original G9 cover was replaceable but so far I am happy with the results.

Hi

I got the screen protector from eBay called NavProtector. It's a perfect fit for G9 and is made of semi rigid material. Glare reduction and no residue on the stick on surface. Since G9's screen is huge and not a flip out and twist like on my old G6 - which could be stored facing in - I thought a protector shield would prevent accidental scratches. When carrying the G9 with neck strap, the screen keeps rubbing against my shirt buttons and made me paranoid.

The company makes the screens specifically for different cameras so it's a perfect fit without any cutting adjustment. They include 3 screens when you purchase. I also think it protects the screen inside my camera bag when extra battery and memory cards are bouncing about.

I use the camera several weeks now, with not much protection in bags or pockets (just looking that nothing around could damage the screen, that only soft things are around or I put the camera in a soft case) . In comparison to the screen of the G7 there's a huge improvement about scratch-resistance of the screen and the screen of my camera still looks like new. That wasn't with the G7 (not that the few scratches where deteriorate the screen quality).

I pretty much universally make custom screen protectors using PSP screen protectors purchased at Best Buy or Circuit City for $5 or less. A bit of trimming with a paper cutter and there you go. My Blackberry, digi-cams, etc all have these. I find them to be pretty much invisible. I've been using these for years and they give me piece of mind if nothing else.

I bought the Giotto screen protector, very tough and good light transmission.

Been on a long business trip and used G9 at shows .... no scratches on LCD ;-)

I use a Giottos Schott glass protector also.

Irregardless ;) what others say about scratch resistance, all it takes is one accident to get a nice gouge in that screen. And about the replaceable part idea - To each his own. I choose not to suffer a build-up of scratches over a period of time until I am finally moved to order a replacement. I choose to put something highly scratch resistant in the first place. And so far, so good. I even put the camera in my pocket with some keys (accidently) and nary a scratch occurred.

I second this piece of advice. I've done this with my other DSLRs too. In fact, with the G9, you can use the Nintendo DS screen protectors. Less trimming needed with those, plus you get two to a pack.
