Vista 64bit and NEF files....I'm getting kinda ticked at Nikon

I am sick and tired of Windows. I have XP and it crash all the time
with NEF files... Getting a new MacbookPro and all my problems will
be gone forever...

Tired of spending time fine tuning my Pc, I want to use it instead of
working on it...

MICROSOFT SUCKS!!!

Ok...turned off Anti Virus, and insured program reporting was turned on. Even turned off indexing for .nef files.

Opened a folder with my D300 files.....and the curser starts to jitter around as the shadowed bar at the top of the window crawls about 1/2 way across....then blammo...blue screen.

I restart....and as before....no report of any kind or error report.

Just dead in the water.

Dosnt have problems with D2X nef files....dosnt have problems with D70 or D2H nef files. D300 files....Dead...instantly.

Update: works fine with 12bit files.....including D300 12bit nef. Just 14bit have the problem. I have a folder of 12bit files...works just fine.

And I want 14bit......without hiccups please...lol.

The 14bit files can reside on an NTFS partition....it is just when I open the folder.

I have no problem on my NTFS drives, but have not tried 14bit as of yet. Would be interesting to see if that is what is causing your problem. Maybe you've found a bug.
jk

Windows explorer does NOT like my 14bit NEF files.

Puting them on ANY NTFS formatted drive I have ends up blue screening
my PC.

Even when I am not using the folder I can notice a diffrence in
performance on my machine.

Open the folder and start activly working with the files.....30
seconds of the machine struggling and it blue screens.

Even if I save it as a .psd it kills my PC if save on ntfs drive.

Even converted .jpgs FROM a nef kill my computer.
Roman I don't see how this could possibly be a problem with any NEF codecs. Once you save as PSD or JPEG there's no link back to the original NEF.

It's starting to sound like you either have a device driver issue or some bad hardware.

Ok...being a technician myself...I am curious to your troublshooting logic that leads you to this conclusion.

If it was a driver problem.....don't you think it would affect files on a FAT32 partition?....as the driver is still installed.

Every thing I see points to 14bit NEF and Windows Explorer for 64bit OS and NTFS file system. The files can exist on NTFS....just cant be managed by Windows Explorer.....12bit works fine in NTFS as well from my camera and every other camera I have owned.

Roman,

What nikon producs do you have installed besides Capture? ViewNX? Anything else? Would you consider uninstalling all nikon products and see if that's going to change explorer's behavior?

I'm still convinced that windows explorer is recognizing the NEFs as files belonging to a particular Nikon program and then making a call to some dll (in that program's folder) to interpret each and every one of them (not sure what for.. may be extract some basic info like resolution of each file, which you might see in detailed vew? or something like that?)

Ok, that's progress. We know that it is not a scanner, but something is parsing these NEF files when you open the folder. Normally that would be a picture codec trying to render a thumbnail, or an AntiVirus that is hooking the file I/O and scanning the files.

I still suspect the AntiVirus, but it could be some other picture viewer application that installed a NEF viewer or codec that is crashing. But the codec would not run in kernel mode and should not be able to cause a blue screen. An AV filter mode driver could.

Can you try to temporarily uninstall your AntiVirus completely? Just disabling the realtime scanner may not be enough if the bug is coming from the AV driver itself.

What AV are you running? What other picture viewers are installed? And is there a solution provided for the BlueScreen in Problem Reports and Solutions?

Please show yourself here with your witty comments for everyone to see.

I dare you.....

But I am guessing you don’t have the cajones to post here where the world can see you.

The cockroaches always scurry in the darkness of anonymity.

I am in agreement with you.

Hummm...this weekend maybe. Will give that a try. I see where your going with this.

The AV I am using is Norton AV 2008. I get no info in Problem Reports and Solutions. Sorted by date to put them on top of each grouping, and nothing with todays date on it....and every time I have checked with the same results.

:-) You can say what ever you want, my choice is made, I am tired of Microsoft... Really it's time for a change!

Enjoy your Windows, I've been enjoying it for many years, now it's just time to move on to something else.

Roman, I'm a Unix guy, so I really can't offer anything helpful. I'll ask some of the PC guys in my group tomorrow if they have any clue.

Just a thought, you might want to pull the drive you have, throw some old drive in (I'm sure you have a pile like I do) and just do a fresh install of the OS. Don't add anything extra, AV software and such. Then run a test. Might be worth a shot, can't hurt.

Thanks...I had seen that and it does NOT include the D300...still
waiting...
Ok, I'm using a D200 right now and will be getting a D300 in a few months but the Apple site clearly lists the Nikon D300 and D3 as supported in Leopard 10.5.2. So you mean it's listed but doesn't actually work with 10.5.2?

Always like to corroberate with talent out there in the field. Appreciate your effort. : )

That goes for EVERYONE who is responding in a helpful manner to this issue.

Almost all of my hard drives are full....so will have to move some files around ...you think with over 2TB of drive space I would have lots of room...lol.

But I agree.....Will try and borrow a SATA drive from work. I can re-image it when I get it back to work after the test. Will check with my supervisor tomorrow...as your idea is a good one.

I own Wildcat Computers in Tucson, Arizona. I have had the business for 14 years and my strict policy is that if you want to Norton (or McAfee) we will no longer be available for IT services.

I have not lost a single client in 14 years due to this policy.

UNINSTALL ALL NORTON PRODUCTS IMMEDIATELY AND THEN RUN A REGISTRY CLEANER TO GET OUT THE PARTS THEIR LOUSY UNINSTALLER LEAVES BEHIND.

Yes I shouted, its that important. Even if it has no affect on your current problem.

They are great, and so are Windows machines; when built right, software is installed & updated correctly, and some common sense is used.

Hey, same for the Mac - gee, wonders never cease

Lighten up MS bashers, half of you are giddy that you can install Windows or your new Intel based Macs so you can finally run some other software applications - like AutoCAD...

Its a tool not a trophy :)
