Kiss N (350D) just died- Canons not reliable.

I have a Canon EOS Kiss N (350D or digital xt). Yesterday it died. The upper LCD will sometimes but only sometimes turn on when I power on after the battery is removed and reinserted with the power. This is not a battery problem as I have used two different batteries, which work in my other EOS. Is this a switch problem or what? It reminds me of a problem I had with my first slr EOS Kiss when I was travelling in Vietnam 4 years ago. That problem I traced to a faulty or dirty battery cover switch and cured with switch cleaner after Canon unhelpfully suggested I took it to their service centre in Singapore, which would have cost more than a new camera.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or does anyone have any suggestions?

I am starting to have serious doubts about Canon's quality as I also have a dead Canon point and shot and my girlfriends has a dead IXY.1
