Skiing with your camera

I'm going skiing next month and with there being great photo opps in the Rockies, obviously I'd like to take my camera. However:

First of all, is it even worth bringing on the slopes? These aren't toys and I'd hate to end up possibly ruining it.

What lens do you recommend? My gear is limited, so I'll more than likely rent something (with insurance of course) and was thinking maybe the 17-55 IS.

What bag do you recommend? I'm guessing a holster type bag that I could wear near my chest to protect it.

Anyways, I haven't been in years so I'm expecting to fall some, but after the rust is off I shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for any advice you might have.
