Should I buy an UZI or wait???

I bought one today, myself. My local WalMart had one left in a box for $499, so I decided to give it a try. All I have to say is WOWSERS! What an awesome camera! I didn't have much time today to test it out, but the few shots I took were amazing. That 10x optically stabilized zoom is super nice. I plan to post some of the pics to my website, see below. (it is currently in the 0.01% of the time other than Uptime, in other words, the server is down). I'll try to post the pics tomorrow.

It sounds like yours has a problem because the focus on the two I
have is great and I've not heard any complaints from the other 2100
owners that I work with. My wife has no problem at all with using
hers and this is her very first "serious" camera. Since the guy's
already got a D40, I don't think he'll have any trouble with the
2100. It's not like he's a total novice at this.
It is hard to accept Terry but the Uzi has been the only mistake I ever made (equipment wise).

Many here seem obsessed without being particularly objective. It's loved, so it's OK. Ho-hum.....

Overall it is not as good as some make out in totaly practical ways. It can take excellent pictures, no argument there, but mine is definately not unique. Others have focus problems too on this forum and I am afraid that if you have access to around 16 units I just do not believe that they are all focus fault free. Perhaps some just do not use their cameras seriously enough to notice.

I would add that it's not only auto focus on mine, it's manual as well. Trying to get the focus to stop dead-on first time is almost impossible and the too-ing and fro-ing to get it right may be ok for some but my subjects are long gone. And there the problem lies - do I return it or not?, well, probably not. Olympus is anything but customer orientated, they cant be if they charge their customers mega bucks for simple accessories.
Minolta listened, and brought out the D7i.

Oly just don't care. Uk turnaround is at about 4wks, and there is no guarantee that they will do anything at all if it works fine for the first 10 seconds of their testing. One of our camera club members Uzi was away for 27 days to remove a jammed sm card.

There is no doubt that it is a great single shot camera but at the end of the day that lens assembly deserved better. Slow shutter lag and focusing limit me hard. Dim light focusing, well........,
But as I constanly say, at todays price, you can't buy better.
With regards to the D40, sorry, but it is a totaly different animal.

Your experience is not the same as the vast majority of us. It's my favorite camera in 50 years of photography beginning with a Speed Graphic, various Canons, including the A-1, and several Minoltas.

Juli, you take fantastic pictures. But despite 50 years of experience, to which I honourably bow, we take different photographs. For some 20 years a reasonable percentage of my income was from photography and that is why I have such a high collection of equipment from a little 16mm right through to a 'blad. My favourite is an old Minolta TLR, when I can be bothered, the main package being Minolta XD7's. I gave that all up some 7 years ago for various reasons, mainly health which is now not a problem, thank God.
The Uzi here is not being assessed without personal bias.

It is not the best CAMERA for everything as some would make out and it is far from perfect. After 50 years I would have thought that shortcomings were just as important to report as the benefits.

It is very rare that people here do this. It is easy to put up 'A' shot to prove a point but much harder to show long term results showing regular success in a particular field except, perhaps, static subjects.

Try chasing wildlife from dawn to dusk (and later!) and then comment on how many prime photo's you missed or had to scrap because the meter/focus/shoot sequence was inacurate or too damn slow. It is frustrating, but I just don't want to start humping all that 35mm gear again.

Now I do it for pleasure, so the Uzi is fine. I just wish it worked better, thats all

My 2100 beleive it or not does more than I exspected.Maybe you exspect to much from yours or yours is defected.I dont have to be a camera pro to know that one gets what one pays for ,and in the caes of the 2100 I feel I got more.Does this make me a 2100 nut know,I just like getting good deals. If I had payed $3,000.00 for the 2100 I would be as disapointed or more than you,but the fact is I did not an I hope you didnt either for if you did I not only inderstand you be I think you got jipped..Comments about chasing animals in the dark and all of that are only ways of trying to put the camers one trial to see if it can record dvds and have stereo surround and all. Then in the end you say but its ok.Whats that all about.Thank god I got something for my money for a change you should be happy I am.

I'm truly aghast with your comments, DenisG. I don't know where you come up with your assumption that many others are experiencing the same problems you are because I haven't seen that to be the case either here or with the units I have personal contact with. Believe me, if my 2100 had an inkling of a focus problem as you say, I'd shed myself of it in a heartbeat and I suggest you do the same if you're so unhappy with it. I truly feel that you have a defective unit. If I seem biased, it's because the camera has been a wonderful performer in the time I have used it. This camera has been my best digital camera purchase to date. I'm VERY nitpicky and those people who know me can testify to that. I absolutely WILL NOT recommend a product if I don't believe in it. I am happy that the 14 people I work with and see VERY often have not complained at all and are very happy with their purchases. I don't make a cent from anyone buying this camera but I have sold at least 20 of them of them with 4 more potential owners. One lady at my credit union had a Nikon 990 before she bought a 2100 and hasn't used her 990 much since getting her 2100. She's recommending the 2100 to her sister too. I'm sorry that you're unhappy with your unit but my two are working like champs.

Get a medium priced UV that's multicoated from Hoya or Tiffen. On the bag, I have several. Check out the Tamrac site. B & H carries most of their bags. Great company and service.

Mark, please let me know if and when you do get a good bag for the
UZI.
Juli - If you can also let us know, it would be appreciated.
Thank you.
jnulu,

I'm almost sure that I am going to buy the Lowepro Trim Trekker, B&H has it for $110. I will be going to the Grand Canyon this summer and I think that this backpack will carry my D40Z, UZI, and MiniDV video camera, along with the associated gear. I hope that this will be good for when I want to carry all of my cameras and for travelling. As far as a bag for just the UZI I am going to watch the thread that I linked below, do a search and some internet research to see what is out there. Let me know if you find anything.

I agree Terry. And for the record for anyone who may think that this person (Jazzman)has flipped his lid over a camera no,I just like good products. This is not the only thing I own that I like as well as I have products I dont like

It is just that I can share this product on this forum. When I am off the forum I still live a normal life and I dont have a love affair with my 2100.
I recomended this camera to two of my sisters and my brother as well.
Trust me they are family I would not do this if did'nt fell the
product was worth it.They love thiers more than I do.If you knew my
sisters that a means a lot.I am not angree ,I am not like that, and if you
dont like the 2100 or you are a little disapointed with it, I have no problems

with that, but you made it seem like all of them had this problem and the rest of us liked the camera so much until we were willing to except this
defect or short coming.I know you want to say you did not say all of them

just yours, but I think you meant all because if you did not think all of the 2100s had the same problem, being a man with camera exsperiance you
would have taken it back as defective instead of looking at it as a common

2100 trait.I know I would have dumped mine in a heart beat as Terry has said.Love & Peace

What is the size of the filter please?. I understand that there are many sizes of filters.

I would also appreciate if you or anyone else could advise me on the Ozunan 55 mm UV filter that is on ebay for 7.95. The seller says that it will fit any lenses that uses the 55mm filter ring. So does one need to buy a filter ring as well for the UZI? Thanks.

The C2100 takes a 49mm filter. I just put one on my new Uzi today.
It rocks! :)
FWIW, I get slight vignetting (area where the lens doesn't produce an image) using a 49mm UV filter and lens hood when the lens is at full wide angle. If I zoom out somewhat I lose the vignetting. You get this effect more when adding tele-extender lenses. I've been considering going to a 49mm-> 52mm step up ring with 52mm filter & lens hood to eliminate it.

I was able to buy the 49mm filter at my local mall Ritz camera shop.

I remember to have seen someone else suggesting 55mm UV filter.
Will this avoid vignetting? BTW how much did you pay for the filter at Ritz?
Thank you.
