Correct the 15.2" is from the subject to the sensor plane [roughly the back of the camera]

I already said the 150 macro for Nikon does NOT have a A/M switch. mine does not have that switch it has a switch to limit focus which is very useful.

Good macro is easy, I find using a flash much easier than messing around with tripods, find a good book or tutorial on macro, lots of stuff on the net.

I love my Sigma 150 2.8 macro, have tried 50mm and 105mm macro, working distance was too short, 150mm is perfect.
