Can S3/5s really rival a good DSLR?

I'm reading this more and more...that the S3/5s are as good as any medium-quality DSLR with medium-quality lenses. Is this a general consensus, or simply the accolades of a rare few who could take prize-winning shots with a quickly thrown together pin-hole camera? Nevertheless, I've seen some pretty convincing stuff that just might support this statement.

Is this an optical and mechanical truth? Each camera, digicams and DSLRs, does have it's area of expertise. The DSLR can excell in lower light, faster action, etc situations. But assuming one would bit these cameras against each other in applications where the digicam can compete, is this maybe true?
