I think I'm seeing non VR 70-300 for just over a $100 and the VR lens for just under $500. For a beginner (me) should I wait and buy the VR lens or take the deal on the non VR lens?

Thanks

Get the VR one. If you see the VR lens, you will hate the non-VR in no time. It is designed so much better than the non-VR one. People tend to think that Nikon took the G lens and put VR mechanism in it. That is totally wrong. The VR lens is a totally new design, which has superior optics and it has great bokeh characteristics compared to the non-VR one.

I would definately wait if you can, the vr version is a much better lens with AFS, VR and generally better iq (sharper, better contrastm better rendering of OOF areas etc).

It is easy to go down the track of grabbing a lower quality lens while you can, but often 3 months or so down the track you are looking to upgrade due to some limitations on the lower quality lens.

Wait and buy once if you can, unless you really have a pressing need for the extra reach, but in this case factor in that you will take a loss down the track if you upgrade :)

Get the VR... you won't regret it. It is such a sharp lens. You'll be amazed at how much you can hand hold your shots are long focal lengths.

The VR version has a much better image quality and the VR is very helpful at the longer focal length. 300mm is equal to a 450mm lens on a 35mm camera and the general rule of steadyness would recommend not shooting hand held at less than 1/500th second. The VR gets you a couple more stops usable handheld. I would save your money and wait. In the long run you will be glad you did.

The reason the VR lens is so much, is the fact that it not only has VR, but also has ED glass which is much sharper than the ordinary lenses. Dave
