E-510 ISO 400 noise question

Finally had a chance to really test my new E510. Unfortunately, weather was overcast, which using the kit lenses left me stuck at ISO 400. Shot in RAW+SHQ with NR and NF off.

Now that I've converted the RAWs (no modifications whatsoever) with Adobe Camera Raw (4.3.1), I see a fair bit of noise. Here a sample (100% crop). ISO 400 1/200s f/8.0 40-150@150mm IS on.

Here's the same crop, from the in-camera JPEG. Sharpness is a bit better, noise is worse.

Finally, here roughly the same crop from my old Nikon D70, also RAW, run through ACR. ISO 400 1/160s f/8.0 70-300@300mm VR on.

To me, the noise level on the E510 looks rather high (both absolutely, and comparatively). So what did I do wrong here?

(I don't think the exposure is the problem, since the D70 and E510 both meter to within 1/3 of a stop here. Generally though, the E510 seems to expose a bit more than a like).

Thanks,

MFBernstein
