Are you looking at per-pixel-sharpness??

Of course it's easy for an 8MP sensor to be better at per-pixel-sharpness. Especially at higher sensitivities.

If you really want to see how the details match, upsize the 20D image to 12MP. It goes softer and - bang - there goes the impression of better sharpness and more detail. Try it. Even if you don't "believe in it".

I have an utmost respect for the 8MP Canon sensor and I really think it's one of the best all things considered. Even nowadays. But for a 12MP sensor the new Sony/Nikon sensor is quite superb. No, it's not just Sony. And yes, Nikon's approach on NR is quite the opposite of the Sony A700. You wouldn't believe it's the same sensor, honestly.
