Yes, that is the method Roger Clark uses. It works well for the Canons, which don't clip the black point. Using Roger's method, I did get a distribution which was more or less bell shaped and thought I was using proper technique until Emil pointed out the problems. If you take a look at his web site, you will see that he is a professor of physics at the University of Chicago and has a better scientific background than most of us.
