Is there any autofocus advantage of having a lens faster than f2.8?

I'm using a 1D Mark II and had always assumed that faster lenses would focus better, but this assumes the autofocus mechanism itself isn't limited to f2.8.

Can someone who understands how the autofocus really works explain whether there is any advantage of using lenses fast than f2.8? If so, does the improve accuracy or ability to focus in low light.

Thanks,

Cesare
