5 good reasons to prefer the 40D over D300

5 reasons to prefer the 40D over D300
Cost of image quality

nomatter how you turn it: the IQ of the D300 and 40D are very close and any preference will probably more be caused by personal emotional preference than by objective quantifiable criteria.

If you then add the price fictor to the equation, the 40D comes out as the clear winner, no contest.

suited for every level of skill

With it's scene modes, and more even with its fully programnmable custom modes, the 40D is a camera that can be used by everyone.

Nothwithstanding all the bells and wistles that will please the most demanding photographers, you can take this cam, set the mode dial to the correct position, and give it in the hands of a 10 year old and he wil produce so many keepers that your jaw drops to the floor.

The D300 on the other hand requires much more skill to master and it is almost impossible to use it as a point and shoot without good knowledge of this camera's specifities

the camera grows with you

This is a direct result of the precious argument but still important enough to mention separately. You can buy the 40D (or 30D and even 5D) as an absolute beginner and immediately get decent results from it. As you progress in your skills, the camera offers all the flexibility you want and need. The camera sort of teaches you how to take good pictures

If you biy a D300 as a beginner you will be very disappointed from it in the beginning. The D40/50/70 models are much better at this but you will hit the wall of your expectations sooner than with the 40D the D80 may be the exception.

The proof is there: just look at the D200 and count the numer of times that less skilled photographers complaining about their results get responses like "you had better bought a D40 than a D200). In most of the cases, this is not arrogance from the respondent but the sad thruth. You hardly ever hear this about a 30D or even 5D

A friend of mine, an IT specialist with a broad technical background in all sorts of stuff but with limited digital photography experience who regularly borrows my cameras was always thrilled about the D70 and now about my 40D. My D200 made him his hairs out of his scull more than once and I am 100% certain that my D300 will be just as bad for him

live view
Live view on the 40D is so much better than on the D300.

It is easier to activate, easier and fatster to use, more practical, it has perfectly working WYSIWYG exposure simulation, live RGB histograms, better refresh rate and for classic concert shooters a superb silent shooting mode.

If you are used to the live view function of the 40D, that D300 is a complete joke. Macro photographers who have all the time in the world will prefer the Nikon system because of its better sharpness and its contrast detect AF but for everyone else, the 40D system is clearly superior

lens lineup

I am not talking about a qualitative comparison but a quantitative one: the choice of affordable lenses is simply much larger with the canon system. Nikon is catching up but there is still a gap. And in Europe, Canon's price policy of canon seems more reasonable than Nikon's. In the US the prices seem much closer to eachother

The D300 has of course also a lot going for it and you will get a lot in retrun for the extra $$$ you pay for it but wether you will get better pictures from it will totally depend on the kind of situation you intend to use it for and of course your own technical skills

Want a second opinion? You can read it here but please refrain yourself from starting a flame war: these posts were only made to provide information to those who are currently in doubnt btween these models, not for starting a fierce discussion between edherents of both cameras already own one.
