Basics on Tripods

Well, I have been looking at tripods. Gee there are crummy looking ones, inexpensive ones, expensive ones.

Does anyone care to put their 2cents into tripods? I am not selling photos, I am not doing studio work. I really doubt I will be running quickly somewhere to try and setup a tripod in say 10 seconds. I really don't do backpacking, so weight is really not too much of an issue for me. I just want something stead, sturdy, and inexpensive. My father has an OLD tripod w/ legs that you have to scew 'nuts?' to tighten. Its kind of time consuming, but works well and feels solid.

I did not see any major thing in the Learn / Glossary, and there were hundreds of posts on tripods.

BTW. I just ordered a 40D, will be doing some newborn photos in May, and I like long exposure, HDR, landscape, farm equipement photos. I also would not mind taking some sporting pictures, but thats much lower priority right now.

Thanks!
