I'd take a shot and zoom in on the LCD to see if the in focus area was in front or back of the focus point, then go into the menu and change the setting. Then try again, and again. Usually it only takes about 2 to 5 tries to get it spot on.

I see no use in taking more than one shot before trying a new setting. The setting has no actual distance value to it as far as I can tell. In other words, knowing it's front focusing my 5 cm doesn't mean anything to the setting. Just keep adjusting the setting until it's right. There are three lenses that I maxed the setting out at +20 (or -20). Two that was just enough, but for one of my lenses that wasn't enough. So... I guess if I could ask Nikon for one more improvement, it would be larger adjustment range.
