Canon 24-105 vs. 24-70?

I'm hoping some of you can enlighten me on the 24-105/4 IS lens.

I'm writing on this discussion group since the Canon 5D often comes with the 24-105 lens. I need a better low light lens for weddings and events. I'm currently using a Tokina 28-70/2.8 but am ready to invest in a Canon lens. (I also use my Canon 50/1.4 some, but it's not as versatile in restricted space as a zoom.) I can afford just one of the $1,000 models, and I'm down to the 24-70/2.8 vs. the 24-105/4 IS. (On a 1.6x crop camera)

Focal range-wise and weight-wise, the 24-105 would suit my needs better than the 24-70. And the IS would be wonderful. However, the significant distortion especially at the wide end bothers me. I think the 24-105 is just a tad less sharp than the 24-70, but still commendable, right?

So my question is, do any of you use the 24-105 as your main wedding/event lens and does it serve you well in terms of:

  • sharpness?

  • lack of distortion and color aberation?

  • accuracy and speed of focus in dim light?
