You should only use EX flashes, not older ('analog') units. The trigger voltage on older units is over 200V, and very very low on the new units. There are schematics available for protection circuits (I constructed one for an old Osram flash), they can probably be bought from Ebay and there was one report from a guy who managed to damage a 300D with an old flash.

The unit will fire but there given enough time your flash might fry your camera's trigger circuits.
