Check out a split-image focusing screen such as Katz Eyes ($95) or there is a cheaper chinese import.
They are very fast and sharp to focus with.
Non-AF lenses will neither meter or AF on the D40

I believe that non -S AF lenses will meter in D40 but not AF. There are a number of fast prime AF lenses around

I am awaiting the Katz eye and I am looking at the 35mm f/2 for around $300. But thats not really wide enough for many indoor shots.
