Another head option

If you use big lenses, a little strapped for cash and can't afford a Wimberly, search the forums for comments on the Manfrotto/Bogen 393. It does the gimble head job without being a true gimble and at a fraction of the price. It is a very easy head to use, sturdy and well finished. The action is very smooth too.

Suprisingly, they refer to it as a monopod head and for the life of me I cannot understand that at all. It is a superb and much under-rated tripod head.

A brief test can be seen here: http://www.digiscoped.com/manfrotto701RC2.html (disregard that title, just scroll down the page a little to find the 393). There are a number of other tests as well if you google it.

Hope this helps, if a little late!

Denis.
