is 1.5x crop or cropping FF better?

All this hubbub about DX going extinct...

This may be a naive thought, but I plan to upgrade from my D70 to the D300, and I plan to utilize DX for as long as possible... why? for EXACTLY the 1.5 crop factor... I have the 80-200 and plan on getting the 300/4 and 1.4... okay let's see with DX I can get sharp 675mm shots... on FF that'd be 420 with this setup.

Now for the wide end, I'd like to utilize FF b/c my Tokina 12-24 is really 18mm (and yes I know the Tokina is DX only).

So in my mind, I'd like BOTH DX and FX ... to suit differing needs in different situations.

Now here's a question I have...

Is it better to frame a shot at, say, 675mm (300mm x 1.4 telecon x 1.5 crop) OR to shoot at 420mm (FF) and crop in PS to then have the same shot as if I were shooting 675mm?

If the answer is that cropping a FF to achieve the same as a framed 1.5 DX crop, then perhaps my thinking is off...

Martin
