Of your 3 potential manufacturers...

Strange that you mentioned Apple. I had considered them. They could
certainly do the human factors well, but I wonder if they have the
optical skills? It might turn out like the iPhone, ie, it does
everything well EXCEPT phone calls! Now if Steve bought what's left
of Kodak...

I do not think they have any clue whatsoever as far as optics and
imaging are concerned. But they could easily ask Carl Zeiss to help
them out with lenses and Kodak on the sensor/imaging end.

Yep, Apple/Zeiss/Kodak would be a giant force for change, IMO.

Another possible maker would be Panasonic - they do not have a really
viable existing range of DSLRs to protect - those few rebranded Olys
don't really matter. And they seem to have an active interest in
innovative Digicams and certainly prefer electronic viewfinders over
opto-mechanical designs with mirrorboxes and the like. Their sensors
suck, though. And they are truly "mass amrket" with corners cut left
and right (not too unlike Sony) - so exactly opposite end of Leica.

Yes, their sensors suck pretty much finishes them.

Don't forget Samsung. Perhaps too much like Sony?

Well and then of course there is Nikon.

I'm a Nikon fan. But can they be trusted with a brilliant EVIL design? They did something great with the D300, but left off live histogram! Duh! That indicates a level of corporate ignorance that boggles the mind. Shux, I was kinda looking forward to getting a D300 in 2008...
