canon did it again: 580ex II

not long ago there was the rebel's (300D) "restricted" firmware. Then somebody took the firmware from a 10D and released the restrictions.

now the "habit" strikes again with the 580II external metering only available in auto for 1DIII and 40D (apparently). Again some software restriction.

way to go, Canon. Nice, really nice.

bravo

explanation:

the external metering is available on the 580II as an alternative to the spot metering of the E-TTL (basically it's the auto thyristor concept). It works in manual and in auto: auto only if a 1DIII is attached to the flash , manual - you enter the ISO and aperture (while the flash already knows it)- for all the other cameras.

Even in manual I see that it gives good results, but underexposing a stop or two - who knows why?-

like this I can't really use it, because of the restriction: therefore I bought a flash not doing what I was expecting. Just because Canon restricted the use.
