G9: Very Light Weight Tripod Desired - Slik Sprint Pro EZ or Manfrotto Modo Mini

Trying to find as fullly functional a tripod as possible for the diminutive G9. Goal is to have a tripod that encourages me to carry/use it - not sitting in a drawer. Hopefully 2 pounds or less, but... (btw, already have a heavy/sturdy Gitzo with Manfrotto head for my previous Sony R1, but it is way too big/heavy for my G9)

Here's the "wish list" of features and the top 2 contenders so far:

  • as light as possible, preferably 2 lbs or less

  • quick release

  • flip legs for rapid deployment

  • versatile head for panning with no vertical motion, if possible

Top Options:

(1) Slik Sprint Pro EZ Model 611-845: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/507998-REG/Slik_611_845_Sprint_Pro_EZ_Tripod.html

Great versatility, but sadly 2.8 lbs. Supports 4.5 lbs, which is way more than what the G9 requires, but that means more stability. Saw and played with it today at the Photo Plus Expo here at Javits, adjustable 3-position legs which are INDEPENDENTLY spreadable for extra wide spread for as low as 6.3 inches from ground. New EZ Multi-action head for panning.

(2) Manfrotto / Bogen 785SHB Modo Mini Tripod with Pistol Grip Ball Head (Quick Release):

1.9 lbs: how different would it be in practical usage between this 1.9 lb tripod versus the Slik above at 2.8 lbs? Would one sit in a drawer and the other, being a full pound LESS, end up being used much more often? I don't know myself not having had a tripod like this!

Beautiful finish...BUT, legs are "set-able" but not independently set-able like the Slik above, making the Slik much more versatile in awkward circumstances, i.e. stairs/steps, where one leg can be spread wider than the other two legs. Possibly in pan mode, the head cannot be made to ONLY pan horizontally - that is, there will also be vertical motion (the Slik above can pan without vertical movement - easier for panoramic photographs!)

Sorry in advance for posting yet another G9 tripod thread, but i thought that now that i'm reasonably certain that these are 2 "top contenders", i thought that the additional attention this thread affords may allow me to finalize the decision for myself, as well as others, very soon! Maybe this Sunday at B&H?

Thank you all in advance!
