Any picture that I want to examine, either image detail or exif, I right-click on the image and save it to a TEMP folder.

Then I open FastStone Viewer (free but nags now and then for donations, I paid up as it's so good) and examine the image full screen or 100% however it works out - a swift mouse move to the right edge of the full screen view brings up the exif data.

There are other software thingies that can be downloaded that will show the exif more directly, but I prefer the FastStone method. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

And yes for macro, bending bits of white paper or cooking foil about just out of the frame helps heaps with either ambient light or flash.
