D70: no PS editing out-of-the box perfect images?

IMHO...

... every camera, even the simplest P&S, needs photoshop work after the shoot to get the best out of the images. P&S's are more optimized towards direct use of the output, while DLSRs give the user the control (this is why people, or at least many, have a DSLR, they want full control over what is happening). But nevertheless, manual input can most of the time improve the images.

If you don't want to PP, set contrast & saturation to maximum, and increase sharpening. At least I'd think that this should give you the most punchy output.
