Made this image of my daughter a week ago (those who don't like pictures of kids, go on to the next post, or check out my other images just posted). 100-400L IS handheld at 100mm, 1/250 @ f5.6, ISO400, overcast, got about 1/2 second to take this shot while she sat on the fence before moving on.

Converted to B&W in PhotoShop, using an action I'd downloaded previously (forget exactly where), then used a Duotone preset for this look. The print looks really beautiful, matted with gallery white in a black frame in my office.

What do you think?

Not only is it a beautiful picture.....
I've watched your daughter grow ( on the net, of course). She looks beautiful.

Keep posting. I love your images.

Really a beautiful kid. I hope i have a child that cute some day. Haha, that sounds like i'm saying I have ugly children. I dont have any children =) too young for that!

Your daughter looks terrific and so does the image on my monitor. Do you recollect where you got the action from - is it possible to email it to me.

Beautiful. Take more pics before they outgrow your DSLR gears.

Anthony,

Likewise, with the pictures of your daughter. It's a great feeling to capture those once-in-a-lifetime images of your kids ... I figure if I get a really good shot every 3-6 months or so, I'm happy. This one will be representitive of her at a year-and-a-half old.

Those few images make all the expenses of this hobby worthwhile :)

Thanks for your comments,

Suresh,

I came across a "TriX" PhotoShop action somewhere on the net, perhaps on DPReview itself - someone had made it available as a free download, but I can't recall who (if you're reading this, please post here!). As the name implies, it simulates the look of TriX film (which I've never used) - I like the contrast this action delivered. I'll upload it to my site and post a link for download when I get home tonight; I don't think the original author would mind, since it was freely distributed.

I also have Fred Miranda's B&W actions which work well - the Red Filter and Yellow Filter ones did well with this image. Also use Digidaan's channel mixer settings - Orange Filter typically works well for me.

There are lots of choices for converting to B&W in PhotoShop, and some really stunning output can be achieved.

I converted to Duotone, using the Cool Gray 9 bl 4 preset in Gray-Black Duotones of PhotoShop 6. The print looks beautiful!

Paul,

Thanks very much for the comments. You noticed all the things I like about this image - great eye! Her foot pointing up really added a nice touch. It was a very lucky grab shot as I mentioned - she sat down for all off 1/2 second or so; it helps to have the camera trained on her and ready at all times :)

Beautiful photo! Nice lines and diagonals which create a nice
graphic feel for an interesting portrait. Your baby's foot pointing
up is an added "kicker" to the photo. Exellent job!

Great protrait, the setting ideal for the small (and very cute little girl). Nice expression and small but there catchlights.

I like it.--GSmithCreate an image today that will make someone's day today.

Found the TriX action; it's at http://www.uidaho.edu/~grie2362/Trix/tri-x.zip

Bill,

Thanks very much for your nice comment; naturally, I think so too! Makes me want to keep taking pictures in the hope of catching a moment like this one, and continue learning and improving so the really good shots happen more often.
