Any reason not to buy a Canon 40D?

Reasons for someone not to buy a 40D:

1. Their not a photographer
2. They already have lenses from another company
3. They cannot afford it
4. They live/work in a condition that requires full weather sealing
5. They already have a 1 or 5 series and a backup body
6. Their company buys one for them
7. They are shareholders of another photo equipment company
8. They like another body better
9. If a compact is better suited to them
11. They are happy with their current body
10. If they are unintelligent

If you don't fall into one of these categories, order a 40D now!!!

I can't think of one.
The main reason not to buy a 40D would be if you only have enough money for the 40D and a kit lens. It would be better to buy a cheaper box and a good lens.

Having said that, I have the 40D and a 17-55 lens and am lovin' life. :-))))

Wow, so if I choose not to get a 40D I'm dumb? That's pretty harsh.

I say look at what you need. If the 40D meets & or exceeds your needs & you can afford it, go for it.

If you don't need most of the "new" stuff on it, follow your gut.

After much consideration, I'm getting a 30D. Budget is part of it (although if I REALLY wanted to I could stretch it, but no) but after careful assessment the 30D is what I need and will serve me well until either a 50D or next generation 5D comes out.

I've seen "pro" (i.e. amazing, both artistically and technically) work from 350D, 400D, 10-30D (and yes, 40D), but I've seen average, uninspiring (even plain bad) work from those who shoot with all of those as well as 5D's and Mark series cameras. Your tools matter, but your mind & eye matter more. INMHO.

One reason for me is that I still can't decide if I want to upgrade to the 40D or go directly to a full frame. If I decide on the full frame I might as well wait for the successor to the 5D.

If I go full frame I will have to lose the use of some very nice crop lenses that I already own. OTOH, if I go full frame I would frequently be content to just add a Canon 24-105mm L IS to those lenses that I already own.

One real negative for me is that the 5D doesn't have a built in flash. Before I get flamed, I would only be using it for fill flash for the most part and the built in flash can do an adequate enough job at fill flash to negate the need for me to carry an auxciliary unit.

If money is not an issue and you have all the lenses you want, then I agree I see not reason not to buy a 40D.

If on the other hand you have a 350, 400D, 20D, or 30D and you don't have an urgent need for something like 6 FPS and you feel limited by your current lens selection then I would spend my money on lenses.

New bodies come a long all the time and you upgrade them as needed. Good quality lenses stay with you and can do a lot to increase a photographers range.

That said, the 40D looks good and if you want it then go for it, no red flags that I can see.

1. It costs money.
2. Do I eat or do I buy a new camera?
3. My 20D still takes great pics
4. My Pentax istDS still takes great pics.
5. My Pentax K10D still takes great pics.
6. I haven't even mastered these three cameras yet. Why add to the burden?

I don't understand the idea about mastering a camera before moving on to another one. Does anyone every truly master a camera? What does that even mean?
3. My 20D still takes great pics
4. My Pentax istDS still takes great pics.
5. My Pentax K10D still takes great pics.
6. I haven't even mastered these three cameras yet. Why add to the
burden?

Working pros often use things besides bodies: props, backgrounds, strobes, mailers, business cards, underwater camera housings, light stands, pocket wizards, airline tickets, etc.

A body is just one piece of the puzzle.

I wanted some softboxes for my strobes.

I've shot with the 40D and there's nothing the 40D can shoot which my 20D cannot also shoot.
