G7 is now the only G-camera unable to make raw ! I think Canon should make at firmware update that makes it possible ;-)

Soren, I have never seen Canon go back and upgrade firmware in a camera that has a new version. I feel sure this will never happen--though I agree with you on principle.

On top of that, I would seriously doubt that any of the RAW converter developers would go back and add support for the G7, so you would be left to use only Zoombrowser--a pretty primitive converter IMO. Too bad the G9, aimed at 'serious' photographers hasn't been added to DPP--it means that those having a DSLR and a G9, if they happen to like DPP (and quite a number do) will be forced to use 2 difference RAW converters--and that won't last long.

why change camera to have this feature, when it easily could be fixed ?
Simple, so they can sell you a new camera.

Also, Canon has historically not added new functionality via firmware. They fix bigs and tweak settings, but functionality changes come when they rev the camera.

the G7 seemed to have had a successful life in terms of sales. each owner knew in advance that it did not support RAW (as i did), so it really cant be viewed as needing "fixing".

Additionally, there have also been many posts related to the relative merit (or not) of RAW on small sensor cameras...i do not have an opinion since i only use RAW on my DSLR

oh, incidently, it is not a safe assumption that revised firmware would enable RAW..the hardware interface needs to be there also.

regards

True, but some bought it reluctantly and some, like me, didn't buy it at all. The G7 still takes probably as good images in jpeg as the G9--just that the RAW (as you know) gives one a lot more latitude to develop the image as you wish, not the camera. Those who have the G7 and like it should not feel it needs 'fixed'.

I think, because the G series has been so successful (I had the original G1), the G7 was still bound to be a good seller, but could have been even better. I think that Canon has acknowledged that with a very slight upgrade with the G9.

Very precise ! I had the G2, G3, G5 and G6 and bought the G7 because there was no alternativ. I need at smaller camera when I'm with my family, but like to handle the pictures like my pro pictures.

Seen in a historic perspective, Canon should make that firmware upgrade and stick to the philosophy that the G-models can make raw !

You know that there might be one or two companies that make cameras besides Canon, right? ;)

Lack of RAW support knocked Canon out of the running for my next prosumer camera. Lack of wide angle may knock out the G9. But I still have alternatives.

I like the G-models, and I think alternatives is hard to find. I've had a Leica D-Lux 3, it's to small and to slow to use. I still have a Ricoh GR Digital, it's nice to use but the files are awful and raw is a joke - it takes more than 10 sec. to store.

My workflow is based on my proffesionel Canons, the 1Ds MK. II and the D5, and it's easy if "the family camera" fits into that. All manufactures has their own way of defining colors, and sometimes you almost have to invent a hole new proces to make your pictures look the way you want.
So alternatives is hard to find.

If you already use the GR-D and Lecia... you know what you're talking about.

How do you feel about the GX100? I'm waiting on the Sigma DP1 myself. If it ever comes.....
