With help from Paul Olsen, Norway, I've had access to a suitable file and permission to use it for an article which really shows the quality of A700 even in pre-production form and with JPEG in-camera shots:

This is what you have been looking for. It even shows that the 16-105mm is going to be a brilliant bit of glass for general shooting.

Saw that one already on another website.

That's great to see, David; thanks for doing the hard work to put it together. (You're on my list of "final approval resources" once production models are available.)

Can somebody shot the A700 with prime G glass, not with zooms?

Minolta 800si, A100, 20/2.8, 24/2.8, 35/2, 50/f1.4, 100/2.8, 200/2.8 APO HS G, SIGMA 12-24,Minolta 17-35/2.8-4, 28-75/2.8, SONY 70-200/2.8 SSM G. And 70-210/f4.0, for fun

I suppose we'll find out in Phil's review, but we still need to know that Sony is not doing any noise reduction or antialiasing that would mess up the extinction detail that we have come to love so much with the a100 for low ISO images. Do you know yet David?

I'm supprised you're being so forgiving of the CA....I really feel
like there is too much CA there, it shouldn't need as much PP as
you've done...which definately did reduce the CA quite a bit, though
didn't eliminate it completely.

What I am actually surprised about is the heavy amount of CA and vignetting with the CZ 16-80/3.5-4.5. I do not own this piece of expensive glass, but I am shocked at the raves that people throw toward it, if it is this flawed compared to the less expensive kit lens.

If the 16-105 is really that good (and it does seem that way), does this spell doom on future CZ glass?
  • You pay less for the "kit" 16-105
  • The 16-105 seems optically equal to the CZ
  • The 16-105 gives you better reach than the 16-80 CZ
  • They're both APS-C
  • You have less CA with the 16-105 than you do with the 16-80
  • You have less vignetting with the 16-105 than you do with the 16-80

I said that I just saw this yesterday on another site. Someone on here
yesterday made a thread linking different websites that have A700
pictures.
And so what? Your mom never taught you proper manners?

Thanks, David, for sharing this very early impression from working with files from the new camera and new upgrade kit-lens :)

Productions samples might be even better (hopefully) than the pre-production camera used here.

I do own the CZ 16-80 and have used it extensively in a wide variety of conditions. While there is some vignetting at f5.6 and over, and below 18mm, CA is extremely rare and nothing like the sample posted. Control of flare is excellent and I can count on the lens to get the best out of most difficult lighting situations. It's extremely sharp center and edge throughout its range. Please feel free to browse by CZ 16-80 gallery. http://www.pbase.com/richard_b/cz1680 .

Thanks for the heads-up David. Together with the raw conversions from Alexander Rabtchevich, that image is really reassuring.

BTW, I played around with sharpening a little bit and noticed that when you push up the radius slider all the way, you get that watercolor effect that was visible in so many earlier shots. Do you think it's possible that it's not so much a case of excessive NR we were seeing in those samples but maybe excessive sharpening?

Carsten

Thank you :D

It was your review/image samples of the A100 that made me buy it, looks like the same will go for the A700.

Ian.

That effect is common enough, but I don't think the camera uses that type of USM sharpening. I thinkt the watercolour effect is due to NR and heavy JPEG compression, combined with some of the effects of sharpening - producing the odd sharp boundaries - and maybe even some heat haze in the Polish examples.

Thank you, David.

Your posts appear to be about the only positive threads and posts on the whole of this Forum. Keep it up....

Life is what you make it - so make it good!

This should encourage us to be patient for the test reports of people that would know how to use the camera!

In the meantime, lets take some pictures!
