If I interpret what you are saying, it sounds like you placed the petals in zone 7 maybe???

According to Ron Reznick's color luminosity chart, majentas should be exposed for zone 4-5. (interpreting Ron's value of color E5 at 115/255. which is about zone 4-1/2 + -) Bright color doesn't necessarily equate to high luminosity (only true for yellow). The interesting exercise is to convert Ron's color chart to B&W to see how light meters see the luminosity values of color.
