D300 storage: why compact flash and not SD cards?

I am using a Nikon D80 that uses Secure Digital (SD) cards, and I am quite happy with it: it is physically small and the storage capabilities and speed on them are also increasing.

Now Nikon released the D300 and D3, and both of them take only compact flash storage.

Why this 'change' and why don't they use SD storage?

Is there a benefit of using compact flash over SD?

Thanks in advance,
Jacques
