I did my research for my new Pentax K10D and the best deal I came up with was for the K10D + 18-55 lens from Pixmania using the PriceRunner discount and sell off the unwanted lens on ebay. The order arrived yesterday in a largish flimsy carboard box which contained the camera and the lens in their original Pentax boxes but with NO packing - the external box was about twice the capacity of the contents, so allowing them to rattle around inside with consequent, as it luckily turned out minor, damage to the Pentax boxes but not very good for ebay sell off.

Opened the K10D box - it contained one operating manual - in French! I contacted Pixmania (eventually) and the very rude person I spoke to told me that a printed manual in English was not available. I stated that I wanted to return the camera and was told that it would have to be sent to Pixmania at my own expense, and that a refund of my money would take about 14 days plus that my original carriage charge would not be refunded. On checking the other possible suppliers I found that I would be paying considerably more to replace the camera (cost of camera plus 3 delivery charges) so decided to keep it. I then contacted Pentax UK for English manual availability and was told by the very pleasant lady that an English manual was available for £20 but none in stock and would have to wait an estimated 14 days for a copy to be sent from Pentax Europe.

At the same time as the Pixmania purchase I bought 2 lenses, one from CameraKing and one from WarehouseExpress, both arrived before the camera and both were well packed.

I was pleased that all the items bought had obviously not been unpacked from their boxes, it is always a worry that you can end up with someone else's returned equipment.

You didn't know that you were buying French stock from a French company then?

They do tell you that in the small print but I agree it's shady practice to disguise themselves in their UK advertising, even down to using a .co.uk address.

But they are French, hence the French manual. Put it down to experience.

I believe they're actually owned by DSG - ie Dixons and Currys. So you're actually buying from Dixons!

I know... I used Pixmania to buy my Epson 4870 scanner and Epson R2400 printer without problems, although they made me buy extra inks for the printer (telling me none were included) whereas the package included inks...

Anyway, I decided to get my new mobile phone from them as well. A Samsung E900 with the car charger they were selling in promotion with it. Turns out they shipped the wrong (!!) charger as Samsung has two very similar types. I complain, they tell me I have to send it back but that they cannot send the correct charger as they don't have them! I ask why it's in a promotional pack then? Guess what, the promotion has disappeared... They refund, but not the amount I paid to send back the charger to their main office in Paris!! Yes Paris, since the pick-up points they have don't collect returns... :-(

I switched 180 degrees from a happy customer to a customer that will never buy from them again regardless the deals they offer and since then I always advise people to shop elsewhere...

My K100D came rattling in a box last summer. The camera died 2 days later. They returned my money, but still haven't returned my shipping costs (they're processing it)

Emails from them have no return address, you have to go through their website contact form each time, even when they ask you to email them some data back.

It probably won't help much, but I would guess the published manual is still based on the original firmware and so doesn't include a host of additional options that have been introduced over the past 8 months (thats if the camera has indeed been upgraded to 1.30):

Best download the english manual in PDF and read the tips the enlightened patrons of this site so kindly give.

I live in Spain and "have" to use Pixmania for most of my photography purchases, the price difference and availability is that great- its unfortunately the lesser of two evils in the majority of cases.

I do simpathise with you though, it does make a difference receiving an A1 box, and reading how to use the camera in english from a book and not on the computer!

Seeing as they are French i would expect a French manual which is what i got when i ordered a Kyocera M410r 3 years ago from them as well as my K100D last year. The Kyocera was packed into a good fitting box and so was the k100D. They did provide a manual when i requested one....by downloading and binding it and sending to my address.

Both those cameras i got at a good price 2 months before they were both avaliable in UK so i would be happy to try em again.

There are no camera shops in Lichfield you could have bought just the
body off ?
Yes Jessops, see the price here:
http://www.jessops.com/Products/SearchResults.aspx?searchword=k10d
It is quite usual for the body to cost more than the body + lens.

The camera comes with the pdf file on CD.

The intention of the post was to inform others of my experience and let them know what to expect by dealing with Pixmania, not to whinge about my problems, that's why the post is labelled 'pixmania.co.uk - Be Aware!' not 'pixmania.co.uk - Beware!'.

Stay away from pixmania it took them 8 months to refund my money after I sent a camera back at my cost. Not a good company, very unhelpful, very very bad customer service.

I have the same experiences with pixmania.. i will now never buy anything from them.. they shipped me broken cd/dvd/mp3 autoradio and have problems with warranty..
