The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens; if you learn to use it you will love the results. For indoors without flash don't be afraid to bump up the camera's iso to 1600 then use a wide aperture to get an acceptable shutter speed. The 50 is not a macro lens (the kit lens can focus closer) unless you add extension tubes and/or close up lens.

I also think a bounce-able flash is a good addition especially with something like a Lumiquest pocket bounce for when flash bounce is otherwise not possible.
