It's definitely worth it. It's very sharp for it's price, the best bang-for-the-buck lens. You may feel that i's field of view is covered by the kit lens, but don't forget that you almost have to stop down the kit lens to f/8 to get best results.

With 50/1.8, you stop down to f/2.5-2.8 and get already sharper images than the kit lens can provide at 50/8. That is 3 stops difference - much more light for the sensor and thinner DOF than you can ever achieve with kit lens (they are about f/5.6 maximum at the 50mm, aren't they?).

While it's not exactly walk-around lens for APS-C cameras, it is very cheap entry to the world of primes, thin DOF, and amateur's lens for occasions where image quality is most wanted.
