There is no low cost choices that can do iTTL and "stuff" .

There is two choices:
a) go with the nikon flashes (I would recommend one sb800 and two sb600)

b) go all manual (no ttl) just AA auto with other brand flashes with slave atachments or look for flashes that have built in slave ability. AA auto is when you manually select the aperture on the camera (put the camera in M mode and pick shutter speed and aperture) that is equivalent to the AA mode you pick, for example, "blue mode" is f/8 and goes from 8 ft to 42 ft. you then put the flash in blue mode, and put the camera at f/8 and all flash photos that are within that range will be well lighted.

its not too hard and since you have preview , you can tell if they are covering the subject or not.
