Dear All

Any rumors about a G3? I have a G1 and I am thinking of upgrading, but I find the G2 to be to close to the G1.

I look forward to your respons:-)--Mads

Yes, I have a rumnour from a German dealer on a request about the black G2:
----------

A G3 will be introduced at 25-30 September 2002 at the Photokina exhibition in germany. One Canon manager made the statement the lifecycle of a digital camera is 9-12 months. So, as the G2 was introduced in September 2001, the next camera release is September 2002.

But lifecycles are getting shorter and shorter, and the competitors are ahead of Canon at the moment, so....

Yes, I think many of us expect it to happen, new model of digicam from Canon to replace the G2 that is; whether or not a continuation by introducing a "G3" was probably questionable though.
Is there anyplace online we could see this said? Rumor is so effervescent.

Wonder what will be the next major feature change(s). 5 or 6 megapixel? Guessing 6 megapixel might be going to far, seeing as other cameras are either interpolating to get that resolution or are still too "high end" SLR's to be in such a camera as the "G". I'm only trying to be conservative-minded of course.
Seems unlikely it would have anything more than the same old 3x zoom too.

So what does that leave? Refinement of the picture algorithms for better quality? Only other major thing I can think of is storage, and I hadn't heard about any changes coming far as that goes. Will be CF I/II and Microdrive I suppose.

While the above is very is very likely you have stated it as fact. Did the Canon manager actually tell you a G3 would be introduced at Photokina?

Did you ever notice that the G2 lens was identical to the G1 lens which, as Phil has pointed out, is identical the lens on quite a few other cameras (including the new Leica)? The lens is by far the most expensive part of the camera to develop, and a 5 or 6 mp sensor is larger than the 4 mp sensor (and more expensive) and will require a whole new lens. It is also rather obvious that a high quality lens is the key to good camera performance, so I don't expect Canon to rush things here. The G-2 is still selling so well that Jens is having a hard time finding one in Germany. They never let on to where they are going with new models otherwise they would under cut the sales of their existing models.

I was huffing an inkjet cartridge and a vision apeared to me. The new G3 will indeed debut in September, as that's when it is due for an upgrade.

I forsee a 2mp FOVEON chip, as Foveon develops up and downgraded versions of their 3mp (Sigma) chip. The Foveon buzz will catch some manufacturers off guard, as pros & prosumers realize that 6+mp CCD chips are passe when compared to 3 & 4 mp Foveons. A 2mp Foveon will approximate a 6mp CCD (with BETTER overall image quality), a logical step up for the G series Canon.

The new G3 will be covered in fur and worn like a hat.

Just you wait & see!!

Do you think we are looking at the same price point? Or will the G3 be in the four fiqure range, just as the G2 was about $200 to $300 more than the G1?

I emailed Canon asking when I might expect their digital line (specifically the G2) to be upgraded to interconnect with the new USB2 standard. They replied saying they couldn't divulge that info or didn't know.

I hope the G2 will be upgraded to handle USB2 along whatever else they are going to do to improve an already great camera, and that we will see it very soon.

Wish I had more definitive news, but I don't.

I don't think the G2's initial MSRP was any higher than the G1 when they both were introduced ($999).

Of course, by the time the G3 comes out, the G2 will be $200-400 less than that (street prices), but the MSRP of the G2 has already been reduced to $799 (I THINK, microdrive kit not withstanding).

For our European friends, MSRP is manufacturers suggested retail price. You know, the price NOBODY should EVER pay!!!!

I don't know why you expect USB2 quite yet, as very few (any?) computers have the ability to handle it. Maybe add-on cards will allow you to add a jack, but that's a pricey, inconvenient solution to a problem that I don't think really exists for G2 users.

C'mon, it takes about 2 minutes to download a full 128mb CF card with regular USB. What's the hurry!! Firewire would be the next step, and one that could (should?) have been used on prosumer cams for the last 2 years. I think the manufacturers must agree with me-that still digicams don't really need blazing download speeds-or they all would have incorporated firewire.

Yes, USB2 promises to surpass & replace firewire...blah, blah, blah. But until computers are rolling off the line with conveniently located jacks and other peripherals are all USB2 compatible, you won't see it on digicams.

Chill out! :-)

What G3 is that, Gino?

Good point. Yeah, I have seen those pictures into the lenses showing the similarity or sameness. Makes one wonder though, doesn't it, whether 3X is going to be the future or just the next model.--Farewell, Bob H.

Carolee,

To answer your question, have you looked at the subject of this
thread? - the Canon Powershot G3
There is no G3 nor has one been announced. Looking at the subject of this thread I see that the G3 does not exist but is only a rumor. I wouldn't worry too much about the price until we find out if there ever will be a G3!

Wether a G3 or not I think Canon will want to have some camera at the just under a grand price point.
