Well I took the plunge and ordered a D40. I was going between it and the K100d. For me it basicly came down to the performance of the Nikon, the AF assist on the Nikon, weight and better menu system. This is my first DSLR. I have not decided yet if I am going to sell or keep my S2. It is a FINE camera, but I have a new baby and would like to take some non flash indoor shots. The S2 just can't do it without a flash. I bought my wife a Pana FX8 to keep in her purse so if we needed some pics taken while we were out and about we would always have a camera. Well I was quite dissapointed in the FX8 and it is going back. I purchased a Canon SD500 that should do the trick. The Pana was a beautiful camera, but the noise was HORRIBLE and the flash was week. This is an outdoor camera only. Her old Canon A510 blew it out of the water!

I have alread purchased an extra battery for the D40 and plan on getting the Nikon 55-200mm lens soon. I wish I could afford the 18-200, but I can't. Can someone suggest a nice bag that will hold my D40 with an extra lens?

Canon S2 and Pan FX8

I would suggest the Lowepro Slingshot.

You mention you want to take non-flash photos indoors. You won't be able to do that with the kit lens. You'll need a fast prime.

I like the slingshot- I have a '100'.

With it, I have carried it with a 75-300 w/hood attached (in the pic) and also with a 55-200 with hood attached, the 75-300 in the other compartment, and a 50mm in the top compartment. The kit lens would also fit up there. With only the kit lens and a 55-200 that will be no problem, youll have room for a few other things too like a small digital camera.

Soon to be proud owner of Nikon D40

Congrats!

I just got my D40 this past Tuesday and a Lowepro SS100 that was delivered today. Very nice camera and bag. Although I wished I had ordered the Slingshot 200 because it has a little more room for another lens or two.

This is my first DSLR. My last camera was the Panasonic FZ30 and it did not perform well in low light for me so I sold it.

I was looking at the FZ30 and 50. I wanted the manual focus ring as my S2 has trouble sometimes in low light. After reading and seeing that the cameras were basicly useless over ISO 200 and after buying the FX8 I quickly dropped the idea. I was left with keeping the S2 or going DSLR. There will be a learning curve, but I will get it with some gratefull help on here. I have a strong computer background and can figure out anything I put my mind to.

Either the 50mm 1.8 or the 35mm 2.0.
I would suggest the Lowepro Slingshot.

I am left handed and noticed that the slingshot goes over the right sholder. I have also seen some people talking about the Tamrac Velocity series too.

I'm left handed and have a slingshot 200. I don't have any problems with it.

If you don't want to spend a lot, go to Best Buy and pick up one of their bags. I got one a while back that holds my D50 and 4 lenses. It says Canon on the bag, but I don't mind. It is a pretty nice bag for around 60 bucks. Dave

Can you suggest a prime for the Nikon?
Sure, the 600mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S II

Just kidding. Seriously, to give the approximate field of view a "standard" 50mm lens had on film cameras, you could consider the Sigma 30mm f1.4 (if you want a lens that will auto-focus), or the Nikon 35mm f2.0 (if you don't care about auto-focus). The 50mm f1.8 is always highly recommended in this forum, and works well as a portrait lens on a DX sensor camera.

Nikon D40 with 18-55mm
Lowepro Slingshot 100AW

Fuji F30

When I bought my D40 with 18-55 lens I also bought a Slingshot 100AW. However I have recently bought a 70-300VR lens and an SB600 flash so things are very tight. I suggest the Slinghshot 200AW to safeguard against upgrades.

The slingshots are going for about that on ebay. I think that is what I am going with.

Thanks for the advise. I was leaning towards the SS200. In the near future i will be getting either the 70-300 or the 55-200 plus a flash. I wish i could afford that 18-200.....dreamin
