Memorystick 256MB?

I find that surprising....
According to Sony they cannot fit any more than 256mb inside the small size of the memory stick. I think that as miniature technology gets better they will make higher capacity sticks, but as of yet they have no plans for it. Lexar on the other hand.....

sorry guys, but sony is screwing you again with inferior overpriced proprietary technology... they are with-holding 256mb sticks so they can bleed you dry on 64 and 128... then when they DO introduce it (when everyone is buying 512 and 1gb CF cards and higher) it will be double the price of CF cards...

sigh

sony can do this because you're locked into their memory system... DOH. oh well. dunno what sony will do when people DEMAND higher capacities. maybe they will finally fold and join everyone else with the cheaper, industry-standard CF format.

nah, they'll invent some silly new proprietary system. they don't wanna throw away those massive profit margins i suspect.
Hallo,

when comes the Memorystick 256MB or higher?

Thanks

--------------------------------------i was gonna type something witty here but then i changed my mind.

Granted that Sony have us locked into the MS format.
( I have a couple of laptops / readers and a camera and they all
work harmoniously together, but not, of course (!) on anything else )

But you know what is really interesting ... Puzzling ...

Why would Sony NOT produce as high a capacity as they could,
even if the prices were into the 3-figures ? ... Does'nt make sense
for a commercially-minded company like Sony not to do this. They are
a major camera maker in a mass-market which is expanding enormously,
so it is nonsense that a higher capacity stick is not around.

I think that despite a few years of innovation, there must be problems
with the format in higher capacities. It is epecially obvious when Sony
creates a 5MP+ camera which is really storage-hungry yet does not
produce a larger MS ...

Their excellent ideas of mini-CDRW discs for some new cameras further
suggests that they are actively looking for a different direction in their
storage technology.

Also, the recent licensing of Lexar for MS production may show that Sony
is desperate for some new innovation and has gone outside to encourage
more participation.

It is embarrassing I think. Awful for Sony to imagine that some
backtracking might be necessary in their storage plans and admit
other formats in future cameras, especially if the pixel count continues
to rise.

So, yes, I agree that unless they sort out their technical holdup,
Sony will have to fold to the pressure. They probably won't go with CF,
but rather something like the SD fromat, or anything even smaller when
it shows up ...

I can't get used to mini-capacity memory sticks when I have my
microdrive around :-)

With regard to the small sizes of memory sticks available, I will agree with everyone that I wish they were larger and cheaper (doesn't everyone).

I spoke to a friend on the weekend that was in Las Vegas for the electronics show over New Year as a member of the Australian press. Among all of the companies that he was speaking with he spoke to: Sony, Lexar and Sandisk. All said that the 256 MB version of the memory stick will be available around June/ July this year. Sony is developing the new size, and Lexar and Sandisk will again have to license the specs from Sony as they currently do for the lower versions.

As for larger storage sizes, the word was that Sony, Lexar and Sandisk are all working together to create a 1GB capacity memory stick that will possibly employ some of the standards used in micro drives and CF cards. This project is also being supported by Hitachi (Japan's largest electronics manufacturer) and Toshiba for their involvement in production of the majority of varying memory formats.

In relation to an earlier post that there were no products that use the memory stick, the exhibitors showed a different story. Samsung is releasing a MP3 walkman that takes memory sticks, several smaller laptop manufacturers are including memory stick ports on their laptops.

Looks like it will be a bit of a waiting game over this year to see what happens with the storage market.

Hi all
Sony WILL sell bigger MS according to their statement on
http://63.224.30.26/memstick/benefits.html
quoted below:
Quote:
Sony is planning to market 256MB, 512MB
and 1GB Memory Stick media over the next
three years. Also in the future, 20 MB per
second transfer speeds will be developed.
End of Quote
What I fear is that this little crappy thing works like smartmedia cards:

devices designed to control a maximum of 128 MB will not be able to use bigger cards :(

So I guess Sony is holding the shipping of bigger cards until they have an installed base of cameras which will benefit from these bigger cards, and the owners of those "vintage models like the 707" will not be heard.
Best and Bigger MS,
Eduardo

Repeatedly Sony has stated in news articles and interviews that a 256, 512 1gig and 2 gig MS are in the immediate plans. The 256 should be this summer and a 512 could be by year end.

Sony has plans to release a 256mb memory stick later this year.
There will not be any memory sticks higher than 256mb.

Yes and how long have they been saying that?? Sony takes way too long and frequently drops the ball-I'll be selling my Sony and getting a Nikon.
--If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people??

when a manufacturer repeatedly promises a new product over a long period of time but fails to deliver, the term to use is "VAPOR-WARE".

this is very annoying to customers and potential customers alike, not to mention disceptive and downright arrogant. sony seem to be getting even worse in this regard.

i personally believe a 256mb memory stick will appear later this year (i can't belive they didnt release them at PMA 02) but who cares? when CF cards are already past the 1 gig mark, and way cheaper than memorystick...

MS is already an overpriced, proprietary, obsolete technology of minimal usefulness in the broad industry. this looks like only worsening in the future, 256mb MS or not...
