Prom girls

Here is my go

If you like it, I can either, do it in the large version or try to get some guide of what I did together. The background could be cleaned up, a bit of work but it would be doable, like eliminating that lamp on the right side. The girl on the left, what color is her dress ??

Sam, loved what you did. I'm kinda new to the retouching world. could you give a quick overview of how this was achieved?

The image was very well exposed so I only did a few hopefully subtle changes:

Adjusted colors
Removed flash glare from faces
Whitened teeth and eyes
Applied some virtual "double sided tape" to the girl on the left.

Unfortunately they were posed too close to the wall so their shadows fell directly onto the wall but they can be removed with some careful cloning.

Removed all freckles (guessing that's what the girls would prefer)
Smoothed skin
Reduced shine on cheeks
Whitened teeth
Enhanced eyes
Pulled down the bright dresses (that sounded awkward, didn't it)
Color balance to reduce some of the red in the faces
cleaned background

My fancy equipment does a great job of capturing reality. Fortunately, I can fix that with Photoshop.

Thanks :)

I start by using the Pen Tool to draw paths around the objects/persons while staying away from hair that I will take care of later. Here is what the path that I used looks like:

Next, I use channel masking to mask the hair. I choose a channel that has decent contrast between the hair and the background and duplicate it. I turn the path into a selection and fill it with white (or black) while on the duplicate channel, (depending on what the channels contrast look like--you can always invert the black and white values later on). I then increase the contrast between the hair and the background. Then its just a matter of using the dodge & burn tools to refine the mask. Here are a couple of links that talk about masking:

Here is the mask I used:

After that I created my new background with Digital Anarchy's Backdrop Designer and Digital Film Tools Light:

Since this is a large file, I won't post it here. Here is my link to my attempt for you.

My touches to this are very slight at best. I tried cloning out the hot spots on the faces. Added some sparkle brush effects to the jewelry. Cloned out the item on the right hand side behind the young girl on the right side of the photo. And straightened the back picture to more vertical alignment.

Very small changes because the picture is very good as is.

I also corrected part of the dress of the girl on the right that was slightly showing.
