It focuses when you press the shutter. Usually this works well, anyway your subject will already be in the frame. I believe Canon does it this way because if you leave the camera and join the group for a picture, you will not have control over focus, you will not know if focus has been achieved, etc. The way it works, when you half press, the camera focuses, you see the green box, you full press, and you're done.
