strange focal length difference 28-105 vs 80-200

Hello,

Inspired by many posts here on the forum I recently bought a Nikon 28-105. So far I like the pictures I get from it, pairs up well with my tokina 12-24/4 for outside good light stuff covering 12-105 in two reasonably sized lenses,or does it?

I found the difference when zooming from 70-105 very small, so decided to do a quick and dirty comparison with my tokina 80-200/2.8 at their overlapping focal lenghts, and this is what I found:

Let me add that I did no cropping here, just added the text and resized for web. These pictures were taking in good light outside standing at the same spot, about 3m from the pot of flowers. I focused on the green plastic thingy in the middle of the frame. From this you would say the 28-105 is in fact more like a 28-80, which is a lot less appealing if you ask me. Is this a general thing with this lens or is there something wrong with mine?

thanks,

Stevie
