Grinding Sound?

Hi!

I am a newbie to digital photography and believe me, I don't know much about digital cameras. I received my G2 yesterday from B&H. Was very excited but was overwhelmed with all the dials and menus. Didn't have much time to read the manual but did do the quick start-up as suggested in the manual. Fortunately I had already ordered a spare battery and charger and had the battery ready to go. After taking a couple of shots, as I was holding the camera and listening very closely, I could hear a motorized grinding sound. Is this sound common with the G2s?

Since I only have 7 days to find if there are any problems with this camera, what else should I check for other than the dead/hot pixel test?

Any feedback or information will be helpfulf and appreciated.

If you'll switch from "continuous" AF mode to "single", it might reduce some of the noise that you're hearing. Mine makes all sorts of "strange" noises, but works perfectly, so I guess that they're normal. Unless you've got a really loud or particularly offensive-sounding noise, I bet your camera is fine.

Hi Jason,

Congrats on the purchase of you new G2.
I think you fall into the group of us who have read so much on the

forum about the G2 that we seem to be intentionally looking for things that could be wrong rather than simply expecting them to be right.

The camera does make a whirring/grinding noise at when you turn it on
and it extends or retracts the lens mechanism.
Enjoy the camera and take lots of pictures.

Benjo,

The camera makes a bit of a soft grinding noise as it is racking the lens out. It is normal - they all do it. On the basis that noise = wear, I turn mine to face the ground when I turn it on and off. This virtually removes the noise. And I feel better.
