Hell everyone,

I just bought an older Canon EF 500mm F 4.5 L (Non IS) USM lens. I have a general question about the AF system for this lens.

I own a Canon 5d body and im trying to find out if I will be able to still use the AF feature of this lens if I attach a 1.4x Extender to it. IF you use an EOS-3 or an EOS-1v body it will work from what I was told. But i own the 5d and cant seem to find any information about this combo.

Any ideas?

Adrian

I think you need to use the original cheap Tamron extender. It has fewer pins and therefore does not report its presence to the camera.

This combination may only autofocus well in good light.

Kind regards
Julia

You can try to tape the reporting pins on the TC but I was never able to get this lens to AF on anything other than a 1-series body with a 1.4x TC. I have read that others were able to get the tape trick to work on the lower end bodies like the 5D.

This was the only reason that I eventually bought the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX. Otherwise the EF 500mm f/4.5L USM has to be my favorite lens ever.

Greg
