Out of curiosity, I emailed Canon tech support. According to the response by a Technical Support Representative:

"Unfortunately, any upgrades to the software of the camera not preformed by an authorized Canon Repair Facility, would void the warranty."

However, from what you and others said, the original camera software is not altered so I see why this is a gray area.
