Just breaking: Olympus Corporate Performance

The LG ad campaign in the US, "Life's Good", is awesome.
Actually - it is 'Life is Good' ...and it is!

Saw something today that might reveal the influence this slogan might be having. Bumper sticker on the car in front of me says...'Life is God'. Actually, I have seen LG in other places modified to fit the business, and not even TVs -I might add.

'We all have it, but how do we use it?'

Well by nice I meant good quality, good products. As far as automated defense missile systems I have concluded that it all depends how those are used.

When you think about it given the amount of tech present from many electronic companies in defense equipment none of them are "nice" in that sense.
Well, they make automated missile defense systems, so I don't know
about 'nice'...

Olympus Corp. said Tuesday its group net profit shot up 67.3
percent to 47.80 billion yen in fiscal 2006 on good sales of
digital cameras and medical checkup equipment such as endoscopes
and gastrointestinal videoscopes.
For a fuller picture, look here:

http://www.olympus-global.com/en/corc/ir/financial/pdf/n070508aE_n.pdf

Consolidated sales: 1062 mY
Consolidated operating profits: 99 mY
Return on equity: 10 %

For the imaging division, operating profit took a big jump to 9.2 % from only 1.9 % the year before. Earnings in the imaging division are now at level with earnings in the Olympus group as a whole.

Sales in Imaging division overall grew by 15 % last year, but geographically with great differences. US/Canada sales only grew by 1.6 %, whereas non-Japan Asia grew by more than 30 %. Europe remains by far the largest market for Olympus cameras with a 41.8 % share of Imaging divisions' sales.

--

Does anyone remember that this year is also the last year of a big strategic 5-year plan, that Olympus published in 2002.

http://www.olympus-global.com/en/news/2002b/nr020729stplane.cfm

How did the group perform compared with this plan?
In fiscal year ending March 2007, it aims for consolidated sales of 870 billion yen, 1.6 times the figure for the fiscal year ended March 2002 (last year), a consolidated operating profit of 120 billion yen, 2.8 times last year's figure, and a Return on Equity (ROE) of 16%. [...]
As you can see above, the expectations of sales were more than met, whereas overall profitability did not meet the goals.

--

Specifically for the Imagaing division, the strategic 5-year plan said:
The Imaging Systems Group aims to establish the earnings base through improving quality and reducing costs by applying [...] a production system in which product development and production technology development are conducted in Japan and mass production is operated in China. [...] it aims to become a major global brand with a 25% share of the world market for conventional film cameras, and a 20% share for digital cameras.
I don't think Olympus quite met the global 20 % share of digital cameras, did they?

I've always seen the japanese use the previous year for fy ending in march. To avoid confusion in international comunication, I've used the span so FY (2006-2007) instead of FY2006.
Finally found an official Nikon site with the following:

株式会社ニコンは、このたび2006年度(2007年3月期)から2008年度(2009年3月期)までの3年間の中期経営計画を策定しましたのでお知らせいたします。

"Nikon KK announces the completion of a 3-year interim business
plan for FY2006 (term ending March 2007), through FY2008 (term
ending March 2009). . ."

So it looks like they're in agreement with what I said earlier.

you know the difference might just be that E-400 was non US delivered
if thats so, what will 3 cameras internationally do to that figure ?

not all that counts, can be counted

Was the E400 delivered to non-Japan Asia? Growth in Europe wasn't beyond overall growth - non-Japan Asia growth doubled the overall momentum.

DSLRs have no significant impact on Olympus overall camera sales numbers

DSLRs have no significant impact on Olympus overall camera sales
numbers
Yes, in terms of units sold, as the report points out, shipping last year were "9.60 million units. Of that number some 250,000 were digital SLRs."

That's 2.6%.
I'll let someone else calculate the percentage in terms of yen.

the rule of thumb as an average for 2006
is dSLRs are 11% volume and 30% of income
not Oly specific
